Located just down the street from our home is what remains of the Lock’s used during the day’s of the old Union Canal. Walking around, I happen to see this thing on one of the Lock walls. I have no idea what this was used for. Why is it here? What was the purpose of it? I also noticed that there were 2 other ones on the opposite side just like this one. I will try and contact the Berks County Historical Society and see if they know anything.
These are very old Valves that were used to open & close the water flow. The handles are long gone.
Nature is re-claiming the old winch used to pull Canal Boats into the Lock.
Known as a Bollard, these were used to tie up the Canal Boat while in the Lock.
Thank You
